Vella: everyday clothing that behaves itself

Vella is the women's label inside the Comforton house, and it exists for a simple reason. Most affordable womenswear in India is designed to photograph well and then disappoint you by the third wash. We make ours on our own floor in Zirakpur, which means we choose the fabric before it is cut, check the GSM when it arrives, and grade every pattern across six sizes rather than scaling one shape up and hoping. The result is a wardrobe of kurtas, dresses, tops, co-ords and bottoms that keep their shape, keep their colour, and keep being the thing you reach for.

What the fabric actually does

Cotton is the backbone of the Vella range because it breathes in a Punjab summer and takes a block print cleanly. We pre-shrink it, so what you measure on arrival is close to what you will have after a year of washing. Rayon appears where we want drape rather than structure, typically in wrap dresses and palazzos, and it is the reason those pieces fall the way they do instead of standing away from the body. Linen shows up in the warm-weather tops and co-ords: it creases, that is the nature of the fibre, and it also stays several degrees cooler than anything synthetic. Georgette is reserved for the occasion pieces where a light, fluid layer matters more than durability.

Choosing a size without guessing

Our size chart lists garment measurements taken flat, not body measurements, because that is the number you can actually verify against something already in your cupboard. Lay a kurta you like on a bed, measure it armpit to armpit, double it, and compare. If you land between two sizes, the honest advice is that a relaxed silhouette such as an A-line kurta or a co-ord set is more forgiving sized up, while a wrap dress or a fitted top is better at your true size. Anything marked oversized fit is already cut generously and does not need sizing up at all.

Building outfits from a small number of pieces

A straight kurta in a neutral works over palazzos for the office, over jeans on a Saturday, and under a jacket when the temperature drops. A co-ord set does two jobs on its own and three if you split it and wear the halves separately. That is the way the Vella range is planned: fewer pieces that combine in more directions, rather than a large wardrobe where most of it only works one way. Neutrals such as cream, sand and navy carry the most combinations, so they are the sensible place to start if you are buying the label for the first time.

Caring for prints and colour so they last

The single biggest reason affordable clothing looks tired within a season is the wash, not the cloth. Turn printed and dark pieces inside out before they go in, wash them cold, and keep them away from the strong detergents that strip colour along with dirt. Dry Vella pieces in shade rather than direct sun, because ultraviolet light fades reactive dye faster than any number of washes. Linen and georgette prefer a gentle cycle and a low, damp iron; cotton is far more forgiving and can be pressed hot. Fold knits and heavier kurtas rather than hanging them, so the shoulders do not stretch into points over time. None of this is fussy, it is ten seconds of sorting at the machine, and it is the difference between a kurta that lasts one summer and one that lasts four.

A short buying guide

For daily wear: Cotton kurtas and linen tops in regular fit. Easy to wash, easy to iron, forgiving in heat.
For work: Straight kurtas and solid tops in cream, navy or olive, paired with a wide-leg trouser.
For occasions: Georgette and embroidered pieces, sized true so the shape reads correctly in photographs.
For travel: Co-ord sets and oversized tees. They pack flat, resist creasing and cover several days from one bag.

Questions we get asked

Do Vella kurtas shrink after washing?

The cotton is pre-shrunk before cutting, so expect under two percent movement provided you wash cold and skip the hot tumble dry. That is roughly half a centimetre on a kurta length, which you will not notice in wear.

Which size should I take if I am between two?

Size up for A-line kurtas, co-ords and anything labelled relaxed. Stay at your usual size for wrap dresses and fitted tops, where the shape depends on sitting close to the body.

Are the prints likely to fade?

We use reactive dyes on cotton, which bond with the fibre rather than sitting on top of it. Wash inside out in cold water and the print will outlast the garment.

Can I wear these pieces through winter?

Yes, as a layer. A cotton kurta under a jacket or a long cardigan works well through a north Indian winter, and the full-sleeve styles are cut with enough room for a thermal underneath.
